What is PerioBalance?

For all those conscious of bad breath and oral health, Sunstar GUM PerioBalance mint lozenges provide an aid to combating your oral health problems.

What is PerioBalance and how does it work?

The Lozenges contain the world's first oral probiotic (friendly bacteria) which has been formulated to help restore the natural balance of the mouth and to contribute to optimal oral health. The patented active ingredient is the probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri Prodentis which acts specifically on the microflora in the mouth. It reduces the build up of plaque that leads to gum disease and other serious oral health problems. It re-establishes the normal balance of the oral flora, naturally and biologically. You should start seeing initial positive results after only 2 weeks as your gums and mouth find their natural balance.

The History

The lozenges were developed by a group of microbiologists. They agreed that a balanced microflora is essential for oral health, just as it is for overall wellness. The mouth and gastro-intestinal tract are protected by beneficial microflora which, when balanced, work together as a natural defence system for the mouth. However poor oral hygiene, stress, bad eating habits, certain medications, infection, a compromised immune system, pregnancy or a hectic lifestyle can disrupt this protective oral balance and allow ‘bad’ bacteria to thrive, causing bleeding gums, bad breath and other oral health problems. It was approved by the British Dental Health Foundation and was on the shelves of pharmacists and dental surgeries in 2008.

Who is PerioBalance best for?

The product is a food supplement which should be used regularly for optimal oral health, particularly if a person is suffering from bleeding or sensitive gums, or when recommended by their dentist or hygienist. The lozenge is specifically recommended in all situations where a person’s natural defences can become particularly challenged, for instance during pregnancy, or particularly stressful and hectic times. Clinical studies have shown that PerioBalance is safe for both adults and children under normal usage conditions.

Children who are a high caries risk could use it as a preventative adjunct to good cleaning and a healthy diet. Patients with a family history of periodontal disease could also use it as a preventative measure

How is PerioBalance taken?

Taking PerioBalance is simple, pleasant and practical: one mint lozenge is taken daily after brushing and flossing the teeth; the lozenge should be allowed to slowly dissolve for ten minutes in the mouth allowing the active ingredients to disperse. GUM PerioBalance is packaged in hygienic blister packs from which a once a day dose can be popped in the mouth. The gum was tried in our office and despite tasting slightly of toothpaste its reception was positive and it was generally agreed that it made the breath feel fresher.

How much does PerioBalance cost?

PerioBalance retails for £14.99 and is available from dental practices and pharmacies.

Keep Brushing

However, the company say that the food supplement should not be used as a substitute for brushing and flossing teeth. Dentists advise that the best way to keep teeth in a healthy condition is to make sure that you brush and clean them regularly, preventing any plaque from building up. It is also essential that you have regular check ups at the dentist once every six months to a year.
